Snapchat to charge users for old post storage

Snapchat gains 11m users worldwide

Snapchat has rolled out paid storage plans for its Memories feature, first launched in 2016 to let users save snaps beyond the standard 24-hour limit.

The change targets users with more than 5GB of saved content. While most users remain under that cap, those with thousands of stored photos and videos will now need to pay for extra space to keep their memories accessible long term.

Snap says users have saved more than one trillion Memories since the feature launched in 2016.

Under the new model, accounts with less than 5GB of stored content won’t be affected, but those with larger libraries will need to subscribe to a paid plan.

The entry tier offers 100GB for $1.99 per month, while a higher option includes 250GB as part of the $3.99 Snapchat+ subscription.

At the top end, Snapchat Platinum provides 5TB of storage. For users already above the free 5GB limit, Snap is offering 12 months of temporary storage to decide whether to upgrade or download their Memories directly to their devices.

Snap maintains that shifting Memories to a paid storage model will help sustain the feature’s growth and ensure users’ content remains secure and accessible in the long term.

“It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost. Thank you for trusting us with some of your most precious moments. These changes will allow us to continue to invest in making Memories better for our entire community,” the company wrote.
