Snapchat expands AI features for paid subscribers

Snapchat has launched AI-generated stickers for chats and a new self-destructing Snaps option for Snapchat+ subscribers as part of its ongoing effort to grow its paid membership base.

Snapchat+ subscribers in the U.S. can now create custom stickers generated by AI to match their chat messages. Users type a message in the chat bar and select the sticker search button to generate a sticker incorporating the text.

This feature builds on Snapchat’s 2023 rollout of AI-generated images based on text prompts. By adding custom AI stickers, the company is giving paying users more creative ways to enhance their conversations.

Snapchat isn’t alone in this space—Meta and Apple have also introduced AI-powered custom sticker tools, underscoring the growing trend of generative AI in messaging apps.

Another major update for Snapchat+ subscribers is the introduction of “Snap Modes,” a feature that provides new ways to interact with friends. The first version of Snap Modes allows users to send self-destructing Snaps that disappear if they aren’t viewed within a set time limit.

Snap has hinted at expanding Snap Modes with additional options in the future, though details on upcoming features remain unclear.

The rollout of these features comes just days after Snap unveiled a new AI text-to-image research model designed for mobile devices. The model is expected to enhance AI-driven features in Snapchat, including AI Snaps and AI Bitmoji Backgrounds. However, a Snap spokesperson confirmed that the new AI stickers are not yet powered by this model.

Snapchat+ has become a key revenue driver for the company. In its Q4 2024 earnings report, Snap revealed that its paid subscription service now boasts 14 million subscribers.

CEO Evan Spiegel highlighted that the company’s “other revenue” category—primarily driven by Snapchat+—grew 131% year-over-year, surpassing an annualized revenue run rate of $500 million.
