The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has emphasized the importance of barge operations in cargo evacuation at the country’s seaports.
The Director of Inland Transport Services, Mr. Mustapha Zubairu, made this disclosure during a meeting with the Barge Operators Association of Nigeria on Monday in Lagos.
Zubairu noted that the utilisation of barges is key in the operations of the Lekki Deep Port and, “as the Ports Economic Regulator, the NSC wants to ensure a seamless evacuation of cargoes at the ports.”
Zubairu also suggested a potential tripartite meeting with other agencies to discuss barge operations and explore possible solutions to existing challenges.
He pledged ongoing collaboration with barge operators.
Earlier, the President of BOAN, Bunmi Olumekun, stated that the association proposed tariff harmonization to foster a more balanced, export-friendly environment that supports national economic growth.
Olumekun stressed the need for capacity development for operators and captains to boost productivity and drive industry growth.
He also reiterated the importance of legislation for transporting heavy goods via waterways, highlighting the risks of moving them by road.
