Sam Altman will not be returning to his role as CEO of OpenAI, Emmett Shear, the former head of Twitch, who took on the role of interim CEO said in a statement sent by board director Ilya Sutskever to the company’s employees, The Information reported.

Shear left the live video streaming service owned by Amazon earlier this year. Shear was a co-founder of Twitch.

According to the report, which cited Sutskever, despite efforts by the company’s leaders to have Altman return as CEO, he would not. There were no more specifics provided in the report.

Altman is discussing starting a new artificial intelligence startup in addition to talking about perhaps rejoining the company that created the ChatGPT bot and enhancing the governance structure of the company.

Altman, who was viewed by many as the human face of generative AI, was let go by the company’s board on Friday, shocking the tech community.

Both present and former employees were incensed by Altman’s dismissal and concerned about how the abrupt management change could impact an impending $86 billion share sale.
