The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has declared that patriotism begins with honouring Nigeria’s national symbols, as the country marks the 2025 National Ordinance Day.
Speaking at an event in Abuja, Issa-Onilu reminded citizens that the National Flag, Coat of Arms, National Anthem, Pledge, Constitution, and other emblems represent the unity, dignity, and identity of Nigeria.
“Respect for our national symbols is respect for Nigeria itself. Each time we hoist the flag correctly, recite the pledge sincerely, or sing the anthem with pride, we affirm our loyalty and commitment to the ideals of our nation,” the NOA boss said.
He explained that September 16 is observed annually as National Ordinance Day to commemorate the handover of Nigeria’s national symbols at independence.
According to him, the occasion should serve as a reminder for citizens to live by the values of unity, discipline, and service embedded in the ordinances. Issa-Onilu also called on schools, communities, organisations, and government institutions to consciously integrate respect for national symbols into their daily practices. He noted that such efforts would deepen national identity and strengthen social cohesion.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, the DG said the NOA would continue to carry out nationwide sensitisation and work with stakeholders to ensure that every Nigerian upholds the dignity of the country’s national symbols. The NOA boss emphasized the importance of respecting national symbols as a way of demonstrating patriotism and loyalty to the nation.
