OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed in a podcast on Tuesday that he spoke with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella earlier this week to discuss the evolving nature of their strategic partnership.
The conversation, disclosed during an episode of The New York Times’ podcast, comes amid ongoing negotiations over Microsoft’s investment in the AI company.
Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest backer, is currently in talks with the startup to revise the terms of its financial involvement, including the size of its future equity stake, according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal.
The discussions come as both companies navigate the complexities of a high-stakes collaboration at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovation.
The Financial Times has also reported that Microsoft may pause negotiations if a consensus cannot be reached on key issues, including the scope of its ownership stake.
“Obviously in any deep partnership, there are points of tension and we certainly have those,” Altman said. “But on the whole, it’s been really wonderfully good for both companies.”
Altman also spoke about recent discussions he had with former U.S. President Donald Trump on artificial intelligence, describing the talks as productive and acknowledging Trump’s grasp of the technology’s economic and geopolitical significance.
In January, Trump unveiled the Stargate initiative—a massive private-sector investment in AI infrastructure, with backing from major players including SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI. The project is expected to mobilize up to $500 billion to accelerate U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
