OpenAI to launch new AI model ‘o3 Mini’ soon

OpenAI has informed investors that it plans to significantly reduce the share of its revenue allocated to Microsoft as part of an ongoing restructuring

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has finalized its new reasoning AI model, “o3 mini,” and plans to launch it within a couple of weeks, CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday.

The release will include both the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT updates, reflecting feedback from users, Altman wrote on social media platform X.

The Microsoft-backed company has been testing advanced reasoning models, including “o3” and “o3 mini,” to enhance its capabilities in addressing complex problems.

The initiative underscores increasing competition with tech giants like Alphabet’s Google, as companies strive to develop smarter and more versatile AI systems.

Initially scheduled for a January release, “o3 mini” will precede the launch of the full “o3” model, which is expected to outperform current large language models. These advancements aim to attract new users and investments by offering improved performance in science, coding, and mathematics.

Last year, OpenAI introduced its “o1” models, which were specifically designed to process more intricate queries. These models demonstrated advanced reasoning capabilities and marked a step forward in tackling challenging problems across various domains. The upcoming “o3” and “o3 mini” models are anticipated to be even more powerful.

Earlier this week, OpenAI signaled its entry into the virtual assistant market with the introduction of “Tasks,” a beta feature for ChatGPT. This positions the company to compete directly with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.

The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 sparked a wave of investments in AI, culminating in OpenAI securing $6.6 billion in funding by October 2024. As the company continues to innovate with tools like “o3 mini” and other AI advancements, it is poised to solidify its leadership in the generative AI space.
