A new study has found that while artificial intelligence is now a strategic priority across nearly all major companies, actual levels of adoption and internal integration vary sharply among S&P 500 firms.
The research, conducted by the AI-Driven Enterprise Institute, assessed companies based on how effectively they are adopting AI across four dimensions: literacy, advocacy, orientation and implementation, according to CNBC.
Each company received a score of up to 100 in these categories, which were then combined into an overall index rating.
According to the findings, the strongest performers are heavily concentrated in the technology sector.
Chipmaker Nvidia topped the ranking, achieving a perfect score in the study’s combined orientation and implementation metrics.
The company has become central to the global AI boom, supplying the high-performance chips that power large-scale AI models and services.
Other major tech players also scored at the top.
Meta and Amazon both recorded perfect scores, though they are classified within different S&P 500 sectors—communication services and consumer discretionary, respectively.
Outside the core tech group, only one other company achieved a perfect overall score: energy firm SLB, formerly known as Schlumberger.
It was followed closely by retail giant Walmart, as well as utilities players AES and NextEra Energy.
The open-source index draws on publicly available information, including earnings call transcripts, job postings and patent filings, to assess how deeply companies and executives are engaging with AI. It evaluates not only awareness and public discussion, but also the extent to which AI is embedded in day-to-day operations.
However, the index does not measure financial returns from AI adoption.
Here are the 20 companies with the highest overall scores, based on their “orientation” and “implementation” metrics:
