The Nigeria Revenue Service in partnership with the Joint Revenue Board, has unveiled a new Taxpayer Identification system for all taxable persons across the country.
The announcement was made in a public notice released on Monday.
According to the NRS, the initiative aligns with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which require every taxable individual and entity in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.
In the notice, the NRS stated that the new system forms part of wider reforms aimed at strengthening tax administration, boosting transparency, and improving service delivery across Nigeria’s tax ecosystem.
“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels.
“It is designed to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and ensure more efficient management of tax-related information,” the NRS stated.
The agency also outlined several anticipated benefits tied to the rollout of the new Tax ID system.
The agency stated that under the new arrangement, taxpayers will use a single tax identity for all tax-related transactions and engagements nationwide.
The NRS explained that the initiative is designed to simplify compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures.
It added that the system will enhance transparency by improving visibility and tracking of taxpayer records, while curbing leakages and strengthening accountability in tax collection.
The agency added that the new Tax ID framework will harmonise taxpayer data across federal, state, and local government levels.
The NRS also revealed that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing Tax Identification Number Validation API currently in use by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions, and other organisations.
Consequently, all entities requiring integration or validation services for Tax IDs—covering individuals, enterprises, and registered business names—have been directed to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB to obtain access to the new Tax ID API and the relevant integration guidelines.
Last December, the NRS announced that the National Identification Number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) would serve as the Tax ID for individual Nigerians.
For registered businesses, the Federal Inland Revenue Service stated that the Registration number issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission would automatically function as their Tax ID under the new tax framework.
