Nigeria produced 1.372tn SCF of gas in H1 2025 – NUPRC

Nigeria produced a total of 1.372 trillion Standard Cubic Feet of natural gas between January and June 2025, marking a notable increase from the previous year, according to new figures from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.

The report highlights improvements in gas utilisation, though gas flaring remains a challenge across oil and gas operations.

Of the total output, 729.1 billion SCF came from Associated Gas, while 643.3 billion SCF was Non-Associated Gas.

A combined 1.260 trillion SCF was utilised, translating to a 91.6% utilisation rate.

Gas was channelled across three main streams: 408.28 billion SCF used in field operations, 370.66 billion SCF for domestic supply, and 481.07 billion SCF for export—underscoring Nigeria’s continued reliance on international markets, particularly through LNG and pipeline agreements.

Despite progress, gas flaring remained significant, with 101.42 billion SCF flared during the period—representing a 7.39% flare rate.

January recorded the highest flaring volume at 18.71 billion SCF, while February saw the lowest at 15.85 billion SCF.

Monthly production peaked in May (240.1 billion SCF), followed closely by March (236.96 billion SCF) and January (236 billion SCF). February posted the lowest output at 199.68 billion SCF.

Gas shrinkage due to losses or metering discrepancies was estimated at 11.25 billion SCF for the half-year, a relatively small figure but still drawing regulatory attention.

NUPRC noted that data from April to June remains provisional pending reconciliation.

Overall, the 2025 half-year performance reflects Nigeria’s gradual progress in gas monetisation and flare reduction, though infrastructure and domestic market absorption continue to pose challenges.

Sustainable gas management remains key as the country navigates energy transition goals and economic diversification efforts.
