The Nigerian Communications Commission has authorized MTN to disconnect Globacom partially due to the former’s failure to pay interconnect debt.
According to Nairametrics, Globacom subscribers will be unable to make calls to any MTN number as a result of the partial disconnection. Glo consumers, however, can receive inbound calls from MTN customers.
The NCC made the announcement in a public notification posted on Monday.
Globacom has been given a 10-day warning beginning January 8, after which the disconnection will be implemented, according to the telecom authority.
Recall that the NCC in December 2018 gave disconnection approval to mobile network operators to disconnect their debtors over continued rise in interconnect debt and facility charges and failure of the affected operators to pay the huge interconnection fees owed. A 21-day window was given by the NCC to the companies to make amends or risk disconnections.
MTN and Globacom need to reconcile their interconnect debt so that subscribers can stay reconnected. If not, the effect of this partial service disconnection will negatively impact the telecoms industry, as subscribers will resort to using overt the top applications like Whatsapp to make calls.
This will not be healthy for the industry because a lot of voice revenues of operators come from local/domestic calls
