The Nigerian Communications Commission has refuted claims that telecommunications tariffs will increase starting January 2025, urging subscribers to disregard the false reports.
In an official statement, the NCC labeled the rumors as baseless and assured the public that no such tariff hike has been approved.
A senior NCC official emphasized that any adjustments to telecom tariffs must follow a transparent framework, in accordance with the Nigerian Communications Act, which involves thorough consultations with stakeholders and adherence to established procedures.
“These rumors are completely unfounded,” the official said. “The NCC is committed to consumer protection and ensures any tariff changes are communicated transparently. Subscribers can be assured there will be no tariff increase.”
The NCC also called on journalists and industry stakeholders to verify information before dissemination to prevent unnecessary panic among the public.
“Accurate reporting is essential for maintaining public trust,” the official added.
The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria also dismissed the rumors.
ATCIS National President, Mr. Sina Bilesanmi, confirmed that the association had sought clarification from the NCC on December 24, 2024.
“The NCC confirmed that there is no truth to the claims of increased charges for calls, SMS, or data,” Bilesanmi said. “Any necessary changes to tariffs will follow the due process and include input from all stakeholders, including ATCIS. There is no cause for concern.”
Both the NCC and ATCIS reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the interests of telecom consumers, encouraging subscribers to rely on verified information from credible sources.
They assured the public that any updates on tariffs or related matters would be communicated through official channels.
“There is no need for alarm,” Bilesanmi concluded. “The NCC and its stakeholders will continue to prioritize consumer protection and transparency.”
