The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has officially issued sanction letters to five airlines for various infractions, with additional penalties under review.
NCAA’s Director for Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the development.
“Yesterday, the five airlines received their letters of sanctions. The five airlines mentioned in that case have received their letters of sanctions officially,” Achimugu stated.
The airlines impacted are Royal Air Maroc, Arik Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Aero Contractors, and Air Peace.
Achimugu stated that the NCAA is still investigating the airlines’ operations and may impose further penalties.
Recall, weeks ago, the NCAA warned that airlines failing to process passenger refunds within the timeframe set in Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023 would face sanctions.
In response, the NCAA took enforcement actions against Royal Air Maroc, Ethiopian Airlines, Air Peace, Arik Air, and Aero Contractors following a rise in passenger complaints.
The NCAA plans to fine Royal Air Maroc up to N300 million for alleged unprofessional conduct and failure to meet regulatory standards.
It also hinted at imposing what could be the largest sanction in Nigeria’s aviation history against the airline.
Attempts to reach the affected airlines for comments was unsuccessful.
