The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a public alert over the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” products.
In a notice on its official website, the agency said Promasidor Nigeria, makers of Cowbell “Our Milk,” reported the discovery of imitations closely resembling the original, bearing unauthorized use of the brand name, packaging, NAFDAC registration number, and trademark.
NAFDAC confirmed that these products are not produced or distributed by Promasidor, noting that the last authentic batch was manufactured in September 2023.
According to the alert, the counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” products were discovered in Nasarawa and Kano States.
NAFDAC warned that consuming these fake products poses serious health and safety risks.
“Such products may contain harmful substances, including toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients that do not meet food safety standards.
“Consumption of counterfeit milk can result in foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, or even death in severe cases. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable, “NAFDAC warned.
The counterfeit products, NAFDAC noted, do not contain actual milk. The sachets feature outdated PNG artwork and carry a production date of April 2025. Batch details were printed with ink instead of laser printing, and the coding appeared on the wrong part of the sachet rather than the designated coding area. In addition, the sealing and cutting on the vertical sides were done manually, further indicating the products are fake.
NAFDAC said its zonal directors and state coordinators have been instructed to carry out surveillance and remove counterfeit products from circulation in their respective areas.
The agency urged importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers to remain vigilant throughout the supply chain to prevent the importation, distribution, sale, and use of fake products.
It further advised that all medical products should be sourced only from authorized or licensed suppliers, with close attention paid to their authenticity and physical condition.
Healthcare professionals and consumers were also encouraged to report any suspected cases of substandard or falsified medicines or medical devices to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or email [email protected].
