Meta on Tuesday, said that it has started the process of blocking access to news on Facebook and Instagram for all Canadian users.
“As we’ve always said, the law is brd on a fundamentally flawed premise. And, regrettably, the only way we can reasonably comply is to end news availability in Canada,” Andy Stone, Meta spokesperson wrote on the X social networking platform, formerly known as Twitter,
The legislation, which was passed by the Canadian parliament, would have required platforms like Google parent Alphabet and Meta to enter into commercial agreements and compensate Canadian news publishers for their material. The decision is a result of the legislation.
Such legislation is also a component of a larger international movement to have digital companies pay for news.
