Lone survivor of Air India crash escaped via emergency exit – Police

Officials have confirmed that a lone passenger survived after an Air India flight crashed in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad.

According to the Ahmedabad Police, the survivor escaped the wreckage by jumping out through an emergency exit.

“He was near the emergency exit and managed to escape by jumping out the emergency door,” said Vidhi Chaudhary, a senior police officer in Ahmedabad.

Ramesh Viswashkumar, a 40-year-old British national, was traveling with his brother on a flight bound for London when the aircraft tragically crashed, claiming the lives of more than 290 people.

The cause of one of India’s deadliest airline disasters in decades remains unknown.

Footage of the crash shows the aircraft’s nose tilted upward as it descended before crashing into a medical college.

The plane involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a twin-engine widebody jet.

A doctor at a nearby hospital reportedly said he examined Ramesh, who is said to have walked away from the crash site.

“He was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body,” Dr. Dhaval Gameti told The Associated Press. “But he seems to be out of danger.”

Ramesh phoned his family in Leicester after the crash, according to the BBC.

His cousin, Ajay Valgi, said he has a wife and a young son at home.

The survivor’s brother Nayan Kumar Ramesh told the BBC, “He said, `I have no idea how I exited the plane.”’

According to the Aviation Safety Network database, this marks the first crash of a Dreamliner since the aircraft entered service in 2009.
