Lekki Deep Sea Port’s promoters, Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited, have commissioned a cutting-edge scanning facility in an effort to expedite the cargo delivery process.
According to Vanguard, the equipment, also known as the Non-Intrusive Inspections System, or NIIS, would expedite the inspection and removal of containers from the port, claims the manufacturer.
The Customs Area Controller, Nigeria Customs Service, Lagos Free Zone Command, Mrs. Dorothy Omogbehin, officially opened the facility while expressing her confidence that the scanning equipment will greatly speed up cargo turnaround times at the port and optimize the inspection process.
She thanked Lekki Port for making sure that the customs employees who do the scanning were properly trained and equipped to run the cutting-edge facility. She also praised Lekki Port for making a significant financial commitment to acquiring the greatest possible facility for the port.
Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Port, Mr. Du Ruogang, described the facility as another crucial facility that would increase business accessibility, facilitate trade, prevent port congestion, increase revenue generation for the government, and enhance national security.
Ruogang credited the outstanding assistance received from all stakeholders, especially the Nigeria Customs Service, for the advancements seen in the operations of the container terminal at the Port and other milestones.
He said that by introducing more efficiency and capacity to the market, Lekki Port and Lekki Freeport Terminal would continue to try to influence the direction of container handling in Nigeria and abroad.
He described the facility’s distinctive features, including how the drive-through inspection system uses dual-energy X-ray imaging technology to distinguish between organic, inorganic, and mixed materials.
These materials are marked with particular colours to help identify the contraband and dangerous goods concealed among cargo or hidden in the vehicle.
