Lagos shuts Ogba Mall, Ajah Market over waste violations

The Lagos State Government has taken serious action by closing the Ogba Mall and Ajah Market due to illegal trash disposal practices.

According to The Times, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority and the State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences collaborated on this operation, which took place on a Sunday.

The enforcement team also demolished shanties and removed the structures of illicit traders along the Ajah Jubilee Bridge and BRT corridor, according to a statement made by the Director of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Folashade Kadiri.

“The Lagos State Government has shut Ogba City Mall, Ikeja, and Ajah Market, Eti-Osa, for sundry waste disposal offences,” the notification stated in official documents.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority’s combined enforcement teams, LASTMA and LAGSEC, State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, executed the action.

The zero-tolerance campaign is a continual endeavour, underlined the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who also urged markets and business stakeholders to take the required actions to maintain clean and hygienic premises.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, commented on this development and stressed that it is a part of the administration’s ongoing campaign to combat unhygienic conditions and careless trash disposal in marketplaces and commercial establishments across the state.

He reiterated, “We are intensifying our efforts to implement this administration’s zero-tolerance policy for filth and careless garbage dumping by vendors and commercial establishments.

“We have consistently cautioned entrepreneurs that if they don’t take the necessary steps to protect the environment, they will face consequences. The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will not give up on this ambitious goal of prioritizing the greater good of society.”
