LASEMA recovers nine bodies, rescues 27 from collapsed Lagos building

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has recovered nine bodies and rescued 27 people alive after concluding search, rescue, and recovery operations at the site of a collapsed two-storey building in Alakija, Satellite Town, Lagos.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday, June 26, 2026, by LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Afolabi Olawale, who said the agency swiftly activated its emergency response teams immediately after receiving reports of the incident.

LASEMA said the two-storey building collapsed at about 11:37 a.m. on Old Ojo Road, Alakija, with emergency responders from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station arriving at the scene by 11:49 a.m.

The incident came less than 24 hours after a similar building collapse in Port Harcourt, which claimed one life.

According to the statement, LASEMA’s Sharks Response Team from the Lekki Base and the Alpha Cobra Squad from Onipanu arrived at the scene within 40 minutes, joining other emergency responders in the rescue operation.

The agency added that multiple emergency response agencies participated in the search, rescue, and recovery efforts, working together to assist trapped victims and ensure the safe conclusion of the operation.

LASEMA said all 27 survivors received immediate pre-hospital care from the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

According to the agency, the death toll comprised four adults who were confirmed dead before emergency responders arrived and five additional victims recovered during the rescue operation, including a two-year-old girl.

LASEMA added that the recovered bodies were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for identification and subsequent release to their families.

LASEMA said the search, rescue, and recovery operation concluded at about 4:00 a.m. on Friday after emergency responders successfully reached ground zero.

The agency added that the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, alongside the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, provided strategic oversight throughout the operation.

It also disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to immediately assess the structural integrity of adjoining buildings and enforce compliance with building regulations in the area.
