Murata Manufacturing Co., IPhone components maker is considering expanding production in India as part of a broader supply chain shift toward the country.
Murata President, Norio Nakajima stated that the company is evaluating investment options to meet rising demand.
“We’ve been making our newest capacitors mostly in Japan, but customers are asking us to manufacture more overseas due partly to business continuity planning purposes,” Nakajima said.
Murata’s components are essential in nearly all electronics, from Apple and Samsung smartphones to Nvidia servers and Sony game consoles.
The company even contributed to a NASA helicopter on Mars.
Currently, about 60% of its MLCCs are made in Japan, but President Norio Nakajima expects that share to drop to around 50% in the coming years.
As the world’s top supplier of capacitors, Murata plays a key role in regulating power delivery for electronic devices.
Apple is expanding production beyond China, recently starting trial production of AirPods in India.
Chinese mid-range smartphone makers are also setting up more factories in the country, attracted by its large workforce and growing consumer market.
Encouraged by its customers’ expansion and government support, Murata plans to rent a facility in OneHub Chennai Industrial Park, Tamil Nadu.
Starting in fiscal 2026, the company will package and ship ceramic capacitors from this site.
