Google has introduced its latest lineup of Pixel smartphones, featuring deeper integrations of artificial intelligence technology.

The new models, Grok-2 and Grok-2 Mini, were revealed at a high-profile event on Tuesday at Alphabet’s Bay View campus in Mountain View, California.

The new Pixel devices showcase significant AI advancements, including a Pixel-exclusive feature that allows users to search for information within screenshots. Additionally, Android users can now access Gemini, Google’s new chatbot, as an overlay on other apps for real-time answers and content generation.

Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering practical AI solutions. “There have been many promises in AI, but today we’re making real progress,” he said. “We’re fully entering the Gemini era.”

The event marked a departure from tradition, as Google typically announces new Pixel models in the autumn. This year’s summer launch is seen as a strategic move to stay ahead of competitors, particularly as Apple prepares to unveil its new iPhone in September. Apple has announced plans for generative AI features and integration with ChatGPT in its upcoming devices.

Pixel 9 features a 6.3-inch display and starts at $799, reflecting a $100 increase from the previous version. The Pixel 9 Pro, offering enhanced camera capabilities, and the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold will ship in September.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold showcased as part of the new lineup, this model emphasizes Google’s latest innovations in smartphone technology.

The new Pixel devices integrate Google’s Tensor G4 chip and improved camera systems. The Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2 were also announced, with the Pixel Watch 3 featuring a “Loss of Pulse” function to detect heart stops and alert emergency services, available in the UK and EU.

Despite holding a small share of the global smartphone market—less than 1%—Google’s Pixel line is pivotal for showcasing advancements in Android and driving developer interest. Android, which powers over 80% of smartphones worldwide, remains a key battleground for AI integration.

IDC analyst Linn Huang noted that Google’s new AI features cater to user needs for organization and content creation, asserting, “Google has effectively addressed both areas.”

In addition, Google has partnered with Peloton to offer Fitbit Premium subscribers access to Peloton’s training content, further enhancing its ecosystem of devices and services.

The new Pixel smartphones are available for preorder starting today, with shipments set to begin later in August.
