Google on Tuesday unveiled a new partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to develop a line of AI-powered smart glasses.
This was disclosed at Google’s annual at I/O event on Tuesday.
Designed in collaboration with Samsung, the devices will work with both Android and iOS smartphones. Google said the glasses are expected to launch later this year.
Google is describing the new devices as “audio glasses,” allowing users to issue voice commands and complete tasks through its ecosystem of apps and services, including Gemini.
Users simply speak to the glasses to issue commands, for example, in Tuesday’s demo, a Google employee ordered coffee online just by talking to the device, which then carried out the request when connected.
Google has experimented with smart glasses for years.
Its earlier attempt, Google Glass, became widely known and even inspired the derogatory term “glassholes” after its mixed reception.
Since then, the smart glasses market has evolved significantly, with major players like Meta and a growing number of startups investing heavily in the space.
