The Ghana Police Service has foiled an alleged attempt by a robbery gang to attack three banks in the Labone area of Accra.

The operation resulted in the killing of two suspected robbers and the arrest of another.

The arrested suspect was identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi.

According to the police, intelligence was received at about 10:45am on Thursday, August 13, indicating that the gang was preparing to rob GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in Labone.

Police officers were quickly deployed to the area, where they reportedly spotted members of the gang inside vehicles parked near the banks.

The police said one of the vehicles sped away after the suspects noticed the officers, prompting a chase that resulted in Maazi’s arrest.

Another occupant of the vehicle reportedly escaped.

The occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee while allegedly exchanging gunfire with the police.

“The robbers in the second vehicle also tried to escape amidst firing.”

“The police engaged them in a shoot out resulting in the death of two suspects,” the statement said.

Following the operation, officers recovered two vehicles believed to have been used by the suspects.

They were a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson bearing registration number GS 7915-17.

A blow pistol was also recovered during the operation.

The police said Maazi remains in custody and is assisting investigators with the ongoing probe.

“Suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi is in custody assisting the investigation while the bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy,” the statement added.

The Ghana Police Service commended the officers involved in the operation for preventing the planned bank robbery.

The service also appealed to members of the public to continue providing credible information that could help security agencies detect and prevent criminal activities.
