The Federal Government has announced plans to launch one million compressed natural gas-powered vehicles by 2027.
The Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties and Domestic Affairs, Toyin Subaru, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting on Sunday at the Bank of Industry headquarters in Abuja, according to The PUNCH.
Subaru revealed that 11,500 CNG-powered buses are scheduled to be deployed this week as part of the plan.
This action, Subaru said, was to offer the general public a workable answer by addressing the transit issues brought on by the recent removal of subsidies.
According to Subaru, the installation of CNG buses will result in a dramatic drop in CNG prices, to N230 per kilogram, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly option for the citizens.
Subaru said Nigerians would be able to save up to two-thirds of their commuting expenses with the introduction of CNG-powered mass transit buses.
Subaru also said the program would help to promote compressed natural gas as a sustainable substitute for conventional gasoline-powered automobiles.
“Now that we have this CNG plan, we don’t even need to import what we need to operate our vehicles,” Subaru said.
According to him, here in Nigeria, we have the gas, which is known as CNG. Thus, the plan is simply to take the petrol and use several truck stations to distribute it throughout Nigeria.
“The majority of petrol is not yet CNG equipped, therefore what we are doing is assisting them in converting their vehicles so that you can simultaneously use petrol and CNG.
“We’re going to create an app that will let you find the location of a CNG station. Considering the price of petrol is N680 per liter, we should be able to get petrol for our cars for N230 per kilogram. Every Nigerian should be able to save roughly two-thirds of their transportation expenses,” Subaru said.
