The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has assured that no part of Nigeria will be left out in President Bola Tinubu’s plan to develop a robust road infrastructure network.
According to a statement by the ministry’s Director of Information, Mohammed Ahmed, Umahi also praised the president for approving funding and providing leadership for the construction of the Sokoto-Badagry superhighway.
The minister made this statement during an inspection of a section of the 258-kilometre, three-lane carriageway in Section 2, Phase 2A, at Gulumbe, Kebbi State.
He noted that this segment is a crucial part of the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry superhighway.
“This is a true reflection of Mr. President’s stance that every region of this country matters, and no region should be left behind or shortchanged,” he stated.
Umahi noted that the idea for the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway originated nearly 25 years ago during President Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor, calling it a dream come true for him.
Responding to social media criticism, which he described as “darkening counsel without knowledge,” the minister emphasized that the president’s four ‘legacy’ road projects cover all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
He further clarified that, when combined, the northern zones account for 52% of the road projects.
In his address, Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, thanked President Tinubu for his support and the various projects underway in the state.
He emphasized that the inspection highlights the administration’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and transportation, key drivers of growth under the eight-point ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
Minister of State, Bello Goronyo, described the project as a fulfilled promise by President Tinubu and stressed that the road must be completed.
“Mr. President is passionate about the welfare of every Nigerian, regardless of their origin,” he added.
Minister of Budget and National Planning, and former Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Bagudu, emphasized the need to explore innovative financial models to fund key road infrastructure projects.
“As we all know, the world is no longer building infrastructure solely through government funding but exploring innovative financing models. Mr. President, having invested in relationships, both in Nigeria and abroad, finds it easier to engage individuals and partners willing to contribute to funding these massive endeavours,” he stated.
