An OpenAI employee who left the ChatGPT developer to join Apple allegedly sent more than 100 files containing information about an unreleased product to a personal account before presenting it to senior Apple executives, according to a new court filing in the legal dispute between the two companies.
In a filing at a United States federal court in San Jose, California, OpenAI alleged that the presentation took place several months ago, adding that Apple is now developing its own artificial intelligence products.
The company cited Apple’s launch of its HomeView product this week as evidence of the tech giant’s growing AI ambitions.
“OpenAI is very concerned that its trade secret and confidential information is now circulating inside Apple, where Apple engineers can shape Apple’s upcoming products based on OpenAI’s confidential and innovative work,” OpenAI said in its filing.
Apple said it has policies and procedures to prevent new employees from using confidential information belonging to their former employers, adding that it had found no evidence to support OpenAI’s allegations.
The filing, submitted on Tuesday, is part of an ongoing trade secrets dispute initiated by Apple earlier this year.
The iPhone maker alleged that some of its former employees joined OpenAI’s hardware division and took confidential information with them.
OpenAI has denied the allegations.
The competing claims highlight growing tensions between the two technology companies over talent and intellectual property as OpenAI expands into consumer hardware, a market where Apple has long held a dominant position.
