eBay to lay off 1,000 workers in major restructuring

eBay will lay off about 1,000 employees, representing approximately 9 per cent of its workforce, as it seeks to streamline operations and focus on its fastest-growing business areas.

A company spokesperson said the move was aimed at aligning teams and resources with the company’s strategic priorities, according to CNBC.

“As we work to capture the significant opportunity ahead, this step was taken to ensure we continue to operate from a position of strength by aligning our teams and resources with our top strategic priorities,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

eBay said it would continue recruiting in priority areas that align with its strategy.

The company had approximately 12,300 employees as of the end of 2025.

Reuters first reported the layoffs, citing an internal memo from Chief Executive Officer Jamie Iannone, who stated that the company’s strategy was working.

“Continuing to capture the significant opportunity ahead requires us to make thoughtful choices about where we focus and invest,” Iannone said in the memo, seen by Reuters.

This marks eBay’s second round of layoffs this year, following a 6 per cent workforce reduction in February that affected approximately 800 employees. The online marketplace has been gradually reducing its workforce in recent years while increasing investment in artificial intelligence.

Earlier this year, eBay also acquired Depop, a second-hand clothing resale platform popular among Generation Z and millennial consumers, from Etsy.

The $1.4bn acquisition was completed in July.
