Developers must have authorization letters - Lagos agency

Before starting construction on any building in the state, developers are required to get a letter of authorization from the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

According to The PUNCH, this was reported by the general manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Gbolahan Oki, at the recent presentation of letters of authorization to the developers of the Lagos Arena.

“The letter of authorization to start building in the state can only be given to developers and builders after they have obtained the required building/planning permit, this document serves as proof that LASBCA officials are fully aware of the development and are regularly supervising it at every stage” according to Oki.

He revealed that the LASBCA had given a green sticker, allowing the organization to do inspections at different phases of development, in addition to the authorization letter for building.

He pointed out that “Doing this will guarantee that buildings are secure and suitable for both owners and residents.”

According to Oki, “Owners/developers must approach LASBCA with their building plan approval before beginning any building construction in Lagos State. LASBCA will then issue a letter of authorization to commence construction.

“With the help of the authorization document, the LASBCA professional team which includes engineers, builders, and architects will be able to conduct comprehensive inspections of the building construction process from the foundation to the point of completion. Following project completion, a certificate of completion and suitability for habitation will be granted.”

In the meantime, Oki issued a warning to manufacturers of building materials, especially block makers, not to sacrifice the quality of their output since the price of cement and other reinforcing materials for construction is so high.

He stressed that such activities can have a negative effect on the new structures’ structural integrity.

He also urged the building public to always follow the rules because doing so would streamline the building process. They should also invite LASBCA to inspect their building constructions step-by-step after receiving a letter authorizing them to start construction.
