Google is rolling out the April update to ChromeOS users, introducing several new features including customizable keyboard shortcuts, mouse button actions, and improved offline text-to-speech voice support.

The ChromeOS M123 update will be gradually deployed to users over the next few days.

One of the key additions in this update is the ability to customize keyboard shortcuts for various actions, a feature commonly found in other desktop operating systems.

However, users will need to manually enable this feature by toggling a setting flag called “#enable-shortcut-customization.” Google has stated that keyboard customization shortcuts will be enabled by default in the next ChromeOS update, M124.

Additionally, users now have the option to customize mouse button actions, particularly useful for mice with more than two buttons. Actions such as taking screenshots, muting, unmuting, and inserting emojis can be assigned to specific mouse buttons. Furthermore, users can set dedicated key combinations for actions performed by keyboard shortcuts.

The ChromeOS M123 update also includes smaller enhancements, such as the ability to change preferred languages per Android app through “Settings > Apps > Manage your apps > App language.”

Moreover, the text-to-speech feature has been improved to provide a more natural-sounding voice, supporting 31 languages and functioning offline.
