China-Nigeria trade hits $20bn

China denies link to cyberespionage group accused of targeting Singapore

The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, has disclosed that the China–Nigeria trade volume rose to $20 billion in 2025.

Yuqing stated that this significant growth in bilateral relations underscores the necessity for China, specifically through the Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone, to support education. This support was highlighted through the 2025 edition of its Annual Schools’ Quiz and Debate Competition, which was held at the Community Civic Centre, Igbesa.

During her address at the event, the envoy characterized the competition as an important cultural bridge designed to foster youth engagement and deepen China–Nigeria relations.

She specifically commended the OGFTZ for complementing its industrial development focus with educational support initiatives aimed at benefiting its host communities. Yuqing also took the opportunity to encourage the attending students to continue learning the Chinese language and “position themselves as future ambassadors of China–Nigeria friendship.”

The annual event was organized by China-Africa Investment FZC, working in partnership with Wema Bank, Stanbic IBTC, and several other enterprises operating within the free trade zone.

Speaking through his representative, HRM Engr. Teslim Nasiru, the Oloja Ekun of Igbesaland, HRM Oba Abdulazeez Akinde, urged the students to remain focused on their studies, stating that they are “leaders of today.”

The traditional ruler applauded China-Africa Investment FZC for consistently sustaining initiatives that promote quality education and a supportive learning environment within the communities.

Mr. Zhao, the General Manager of China-Africa Investment FZC, reiterated the company’s commitment to uplifting its host communities. He praised the commitment shown by teachers and emphasized that the company’s educational support extends beyond the annual event.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abiodun Agbetola, Wema Bank’s Business Development Manager, reaffirmed the bank’s support for youth development. He explicitly stated that “Wema Bank remains committed to initiatives that enhance intellectual capacity and human development.”

As part of the empowerment efforts tied to the educational initiative, modern mowing machines were also donated to all 18 public schools situated in the Igbesa and Ejila-Awori areas to improve their learning environments.
