CBN labels Aisha Buhari’s old naira deadline extension post fake news

The Central Bank of Nigeria has described as fake the news making the rounds that it was directed by the President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to only circulate the old N200, N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender for 70 days up to May 1st, 2023.

 

Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari had on Tuesday morning on her social media handles posted a press release from the CBN stating that Buhari has directed that all the old naira note should be issued out by the CBN for usage.

 

The CBN in a fresh release signed by its Director, Corporate Communications Department, Osita Nwanisobi however debunked the information describing it has fake news.

 

It said the President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) only directed that the Apex financial body to circulate the old N200 note as legal tender for 60days.

 

The statement reads:“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorized messages quoting the CBN as having authorized the Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 Banknotes.

 

“For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr. President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been directed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10, 2023. Members of the public should therefore disregard any message and/or information not formally released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject.”

 

The statement advised media practitioners to verify any information from the correct sources before publication.
