The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has underscored the critical importance of cabin safety, training, and professionalism within the aviation sector.
Acting Director-General, Chris Najomo made this disclosure at the NCAA’s annual cabin safety workshop held recently in Lagos, according to The Punch.
The workshop, titled “Culture, Attitude and Cabin Safety,” brought together airline operators and other industry stakeholders.
Najomo, represented by Lagos Regional Manager Mrs. Bukola Teriba, emphasized that flight crews must excel in teamwork and effective communication to enhance air safety.
He highlighted that safety is an ongoing process and stressed the necessity for continuous training to uphold International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
“Safety is a continuous change,” he stated, reaffirming the industry’s commitment to rigorous regulation and compliance with ICAO practices.
“The NCAA is about training and retraining, that is why we have made provisions for continuous training. Training has a continuous impact on knowledge.
“No knowledge is lost and safety is our priority,” he said.
Najomo also emphasized that the NCAA is committed to maintaining a safe airspace.
He highlighted that the role of cabin crew extends beyond serving meals; their primary responsibilities include preventing incidents on board and ensuring passengers feel confident about their safety.
“Flight crews are very important, that is why we pay a lot of attention to their training.
“Like in the NCAA, we have online training, which the ICAO has lined up because it is a highly regulated unit,” he said.
In her remark, the NCAA’s Head of Cabin Safety Inspection, Mrs Maria Umor-Ordor, stated that cabin crew or cabin safety professionals should rise above culture and attitude and be professional.
She said “The workshop is focusing on all the aspects that you have to bring to play in terms of professionalism that scores you as a safety professional.”
