The National Bureau of Statistics reports that while the price of Premium Motor Spirit increased at the pump, the average cost of bus travel within Nigerian cities increased from N649.59 in May 2023 to N1,285.41 in June 2023.

These figures which were derived from the NBS’s June 2023 Transport Fare Watch report indicate that within a month, the cost of intra-city bus transit increased by 98%, or N636.

This, among other things, was reported to feature the breakdown of bus trips inside cities by drop-constant route and bus trip intercity (state route) fees per person.

According to the report, bus prices increased annually by 120.63 per cent from the N582.61 that riders paid in June 2022.

The average intercity bus price paid by commuters increased to N5,686.49 in June 2023 from N4,002.16 in May 2023, representing a monthly increase of 42.09 per cent.

The average fare that commuters paid for bus trips within the city each drop jumped by 97.88% from N649.59 in May 2023 to N1,285.41 in June 2023, according to the data. From N582.61 in June 2022, it increased by 120.63% year over year.

The average fare that commuters paid for intercity bus trips each drop in a different category increased to N5,686.49 in June 2023 from N4,002.16 in May 2023, representing a 42.09 per cent month-over-month increase. The fare increased by 55.25 per cent from N3,662.87 in June 2022 on an annual basis.
