Apple TV to air formula 1 in landmark $750m US deal

Apple has secured the rights to broadcast Formula 1 in the United States for the next five years in a deal reportedly worth around $750 million (£558 million).

Starting in 2026, Apple is said to be paying roughly $150 million (£111.6 million) annually, making F1 available to all Apple TV subscribers in the US as part of their standard subscription.

This marks Apple’s first major foray into sports broadcasting on this scale. While Apple already offers coverage of Major League Soccer, that requires an additional fee beyond the basic Apple TV subscription.

Subscribers will be able to watch live coverage of every on-track session, along with all content from the sport’s own channel, F1 TV.

Apple has not yet decided on commentary arrangements and will initially rely on existing coverage, likely sourcing it from F1 TV or the UK’s Sky network.

The popular Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive will continue unaffected by the deal.

The F1 movie released earlier this year, starring Brad Pitt, was a significant factor in Apple securing the broadcast rights.

F1’s previous US broadcast rights were held by ESPN, which paid around $80 million (£60 million) per year.

F1 said the new deal with Apple would “amplify the sport across” all of Apple’s platforms, including News, Maps, Music, Sports, and Fitness+.

F1 chairman Stefano Domenicali said, “This is an incredibly exciting partnership for both Formula 1 and Apple that will ensure we can continue to maximise our growth potential in the US with the right content and innovative distribution channels.”

Also, Apple’s senior vice-president of services, Eddy Cue, said the company “looked forward to delivering premium and innovative fan-first coverage to our customers in a way that only Apple can.”

Cue told a news conference that F1 has expanded in the US market in recent years but “it can still grow exponentially.”
