Apple, Samsung benefit as Trump excludes key electronics from tariffs

President Donald Trump’s administration exempted smartphones, computers, and other electronics from its so-called reciprocal tariffs, aiming to shield consumers from price hikes and support major tech firms like Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.

The exclusions cover smartphones, laptops, hard drives, computer processors, and memory chips—popular electronics that are largely not produced in the U.S., with domestic manufacturing likely to take years to establish.

Also exempt are machines used in semiconductor manufacturing, a key benefit for companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which has announced major investments in the U.S., along with other chipmakers.

The tariff relief may be short-lived. The exclusions arise from the original order, which avoided piling additional tariffs on top of existing country-wide rates for certain sectors. However, the move signals that these products could soon face a different set of tariffs—likely lower ones specifically targeting China.

One notable exclusion applies to semiconductors, a sector Trump has repeatedly promised to target with specific tariffs. While he hasn’t imposed such duties yet, the latest exclusions seem to align with that intended exemption.
