Apple clarifies Siri privacy policy after $95m settlement

Apple partners Anthropic on AI-Powered 'vibe coding' platform

Apple Inc. has updated its privacy policies regarding Siri after a $95 million settlement over claims of unauthorized recordings.

The company clarified that it has never sold or used Siri data for marketing purposes.

According to Reuters, Apple clarified its privacy stance on Wednesday, stating, “Apple has never used Siri data to build marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising, and never sold it to anyone for any purpose.”

This follows accusations that Apple recorded private conversations via Siri and shared them with third parties, including advertisers.

While Apple settled the lawsuit, it did not admit to the allegations.

The company explained that some Siri features require real-time input from Apple servers, but only minimal data is used to ensure accuracy.

Apple further clarified that audio recordings of Siri interactions are not stored unless users choose to opt-in to improve Siri.

Even then, the recordings are solely for enhancement purposes.

The company emphasized its commitment to advancing technologies that improve Siri’s privacy.

A similar lawsuit involving Google’s Voice Assistant is currently ongoing in San Jose, California, with the same law firms representing the plaintiffs as in the Apple case.

The settlement, as previously reported, could benefit millions of U.S. consumers who owned Apple devices between September 2014 and December 2024.

Eligible users can receive up to $20 per Siri-enabled device, with a maximum of five claims per person. Approved claimants are expected to receive payments within 60 days of filing.
