Amazon to make movie on Altman's dramatic OpenAI exit, return

A feature film chronicling one of Silicon Valley’s most dramatic leadership shakeups is reportedly developing at Amazon MGM Studios.

The movie “Artificial ” will depict the chaotic five-day period in November 2023 when OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was abruptly fired and subsequently reinstated.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino—known for Call Me by Your Name and Challengers—is in talks to helm the project. Casting discussions are also underway, with Andrew Garfield reportedly eyed to play Altman. Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) is being considered for the role of former CTO Mira Murati, while Yura Borisov (Anora) may portray Ilya Sutskever, the OpenAI co-founder who played a key role in Altman’s removal.

The screenplay is said to be written by Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich, suggesting a satirical or comedic tone. Given the surreal nature of the real-life events, a humor-infused approach may resonate with audiences navigating the often perplexing world of artificial intelligence.

The events at OpenAI sparked global headlines in late 2023, when Altman was dismissed by the company’s board over concerns about his leadership. His departure triggered internal upheaval and external pressure, ultimately leading to his dramatic return just five days later following intense negotiations.

As AI tools like ChatGPT become more deeply embedded in everyday life, Artificial is poised to offer a timely—and potentially irreverent—take on one of the tech industry’s most pivotal moments.
