The President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, has pushed for international collaboration to help Africa meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
Independent News reported that he said this while speaking at the Islamic Development Bank Group’s Annual Meetings under the theme “Sustainable Development Disrupted: Advancing Impactful Partnerships to Rescue the SDGs.”
Adesina praised the IsDB for being a dependable partner and helping to co-finance operations that have exceeded their initial $2 billion goal to reach $2.4 billion and made a difference in 14 countries through 19 projects.
These initiatives, which are in line with the SDGs and the African Union’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, cover vital industries like agriculture, energy, water and sanitation, transport, and health.
According to Adesina, the SDGs will not be achieved globally unless they are achieved in Africa.
He said that “partnerships guided by mutual accountability” were essential to success. mentioning the need for “a lot more resources to deliver the SDGs” on the continent.
He also outlined three key success factors: redirecting $100 billion in Special Drawing Rights to Africa, utilizing more private sector funding, and resolutely addressing the continent’s mounting debt problems.
According to Adesina, “We are capable of incredible things when we work in partnerships.”
He also emphasized the urgent need for international cooperation to address the huge shortage of access to power in Africa, where over 600 million people live.
