The Federal Government has been urged by the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers to develop ways to guarantee gas price stability and make it accessible to ordinary Nigerians.
The Punch reported that the request was made by the national president of NALPGAM, Abideen Olatunbosun, on Tuesday in Ibadan, Oyo State, at the association’s 36th annual general meeting/conference, which had as its topic “Expanding gas utilization beyond imagination.”
He emphasized that if nothing was done to stop the price growth, petrol would soon become a luxury item only for a few wealthy people.
Olatunbosun stated, “It is very important for me to mention that the recent, astronomical increase in petrol prices poses a significant challenge to LPG merchants.
“The government must devise strategies to guarantee petrol price stability and to make petrol accessible to ordinary Nigerians. Petrol will soon become a luxury item for the few wealthy people in our society if nothing is done to stop the price growth.”
He claimed that as a country, we must increase the amount of petrol we use. “If we switch to petrol, our forests will be preserved, our lifestyle will be improved, and the economy will expand. Everyone is concerned about the increase in petrol prices.”
In his lecture, the guest speaker, Prof. Sunday Isehunwa of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan, listed a number of challenges facing the country’s LPG market, including changes in demand, changes in supply, natural gas production and consumption, changes in price, and changes in electricity pricing.
