Anthropic unveils AI-powered personal finance tool for Claude users

Anthropic has introduced Personal Finance, a beta feature that allows eligible Claude subscribers in the United States to connect their bank and card accounts to the artificial intelligence chatbot for financial insights.

The feature, announced on Thursday, is available to subscribers on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans.

It allows users to ask questions about their finances, although access is restricted to viewing information, meaning Claude cannot transfer, manage or invest money.

Users can link their financial accounts through Plaid, a financial data connectivity platform, without sharing their banking passwords with Claude.

Once connected, the chatbot can analyse account balances and up to two years of transaction history to explain monthly spending patterns and identify duplicate charges and fees.

It can also generate charts and dashboards to help users understand their financial activities. Anthropic said the feature does not include advertisements.

Anthropic said Personal Finance does not feature advertisements or sponsored recommendations, adding that it does not offer its own credit cards, loans or savings accounts.

The company also said conversations using the feature are not used to train its artificial intelligence models, while information from linked financial accounts is excluded from Claude’s shared memory.

However, it cautioned that the chatbot could make mistakes and advised users to verify important figures with their banks.

The feature also has some restrictions. For investment, loan and credit card accounts, Claude can only access account balances and credit limits. Users can connect up to 16 US financial institutions.

Anthropic added that financial information already shared with Claude would remain in conversations, generated documents and shared links until users delete them, even after disconnecting their bank accounts.

Meanwhile, OpenAI introduced a similar feature in May, allowing ChatGPT users to connect their bank accounts through Plaid, initially making the service available to subscribers on its $200 monthly Pro plan.

Unlike Anthropic, OpenAI has begun introducing advertisements on ChatGPT.
