United States Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is expected to announce on Tuesday that the Federal Aviation Administration has approved Boeing’s 737 MAX 10.

This is according to Reuters citing sources familiar with the plans.

Duffy is scheduled to visit Boeing’s factory in Everett, Washington, to announce the certification of the long-delayed, larger variant of the aircraft manufacturer’s best-selling 737 family.

Boeing opened a new production line at the Everett facility in July to expand 737 MAX output.

The FAA conducted a Type Certification Board review on Friday, involving members of its management team, as the final step before deciding whether to certify the aircraft.

Airlines have ordered nearly 1,500 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, accounting for about 30 per cent of the manufacturer’s outstanding 737 order backlog.

Boeing has already built several units of the model that are awaiting delivery.
