An Air India flight travelling from Frankfurt, Germany, to New Delhi, India, was rerouted to Jaipur on Wednesday after a security alert tied to a reported bomb threat and a suspected hijacking rumour.
The aircraft, identified as AI 2030, touched down safely at Jaipur International Airport and was taken to an isolation bay, where security personnel started inspecting the plane and the passengers’ luggage.
Republic World reported on Wednesday that the diversion was a precautionary step, taken after the alert surfaced while the plane was nearing Indian airspace.
Officers of the Central Industrial Security Force, local police and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad began combing through the aircraft and the passengers’ baggage after it landed.
An airport source quoted by Hindustan Times, however, said the alert stemmed from a hijacking rumour and not from a confirmed bomb threat.
“It was a hijacking rumour, not a bomb threat. It’s too early to comment officially on the matter. An investigation is underway,” an airport official told Hindustan Times on condition of anonymity.
Preliminary information indicated that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft and moved to a designated holding area inside the airport terminal.
The alert was reportedly raised as the plane approached Indian airspace, which led Air Traffic Control (ATC) and security agencies to act before the flight was redirected to Jaipur.
The aircraft was then moved to an isolation bay so that security teams could carry out their checks.
As of the time of reporting, neither Air India nor the authorities at Jaipur airport had released an official statement on the incident.
Further details on the source of the alert and the circumstances behind the reported hijacking rumour were still awaited as security agencies continued their investigation.
The nature of the alert had not been independently established in the reports available at the time of publication.
