As part of ongoing efforts to enhance electricity grid management in Nigeria, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has formally handed over the control room extension housing the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System at the Gwagwalada 330kV Transmission Substation to the Nigerian Independent System Operator.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the facility was officially transferred on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, and will function as a temporary National Control Centre in Abuja.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, described the handover as a landmark achievement for the company and a major step forward in the collective drive to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
Represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Amini Tahir, Abdulaziz said the completion of the facility signified more than the successful delivery of a construction project, describing it as the beginning of a new era in electricity grid management and national power system coordination.
“The building was designed as temporary accommodation for the newly acquired SCADA-EMS and telecommunications systems, along with a dedicated team of operational staff.
“It will now serve as a temporary operational base for NISO, enabling the organisation to oversee grid operations more efficiently and reliably until the permanent NCC becomes operational,” he said.
He added, “With this handover, NISO will assume full responsibility for operating and maintaining the facility. We hand over this facility to NISO because we believe it is key to better grid management, improved system reliability and better service delivery for Nigerians. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a stronger and more resilient grid.”
Abdulaziz also expressed gratitude to the World Bank for its continued support throughout the project. He reaffirmed TCN’s commitment to collaboration, innovation and service excellence as the facility begins operations under NISO pending the commissioning of the permanent National Control Centre in Gwagwalada.
In his acceptance remarks, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Abdu Mohammed Bello, who was represented by the General Manager, System Planning, Kabir Adamu, thanked the TCN management for successfully delivering the project.
He described the handover as more than the transfer of a physical facility, saying it represents a significant step towards a more coordinated, reliable and efficient national power system.
He described the handover as a critical step towards strengthening the operational capacity of Nigeria’s electricity grid.
“We all recognise the importance of SCADA-EMS for grid operations. This control room provides NISO with the environment needed to commence the operationalisation of the SCADA/EMS project at this stage of its deployment,” he said.
He assured stakeholders that NISO would manage the facility responsibly to support efficient and reliable grid operations, while reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to continued collaboration in advancing the country’s power sector.
