Elon Musk’s estranged daughter ends interview after question about father

Vivian Jenna Wilson drew widespread attention this week after abruptly walking out of a red carpet interview when a reporter asked her about her father, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

The incident occurred during a Desigual Vintage event held in Ibiza, Spain, on Tuesday, where the 22-year-old model and activist was speaking with reporters before the conversation shifted towards her family background.

Footage circulating on social media showed a reporter asking Wilson, “Your father the best, no?” Confused by the question, she responded, “My what? Sorry?” The reporter repeated the question, saying, “The best, your father.”

After a brief pause, Wilson replied, “OK,” before abruptly ending the interview and walking away from the cameras.

The red carpet moment has been described as another public reflection of the long-standing estrangement between Wilson and Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive.

Wilson publicly came out as transgender in 2020 and legally changed her name and gender in 2022. As part of the legal process, she formally dropped the Musk surname and stated in court documents that she no longer wished to be related to her biological father “in any way, shape or form.”

Since then, both Wilson and Musk have spoken publicly at different times about the breakdown of their relationship, with Wilson consistently maintaining distance from her father.

In a 2024 interview with NBC News, Wilson said Musk “wasn’t there” during much of her upbringing and alleged she faced criticism for expressing femininity and queerness as a child. She later reinforced her position on the social media platform Threads, writing that she had disowned Musk, rather than the other way around.

Elon Musk has also addressed the situation publicly on several occasions. In conversations with biographer Walter Isaacson and psychologist Jordan Peterson, Musk discussed his daughter’s transition and their strained relationship.

Wilson is among Musk’s oldest children. She and her twin brother, Griffin, were born in California in 2004 during Musk’s marriage to author Justine Wilson.

In a widely discussed 2024 interview, Elon Musk referred to Wilson by her former name and claimed he had been misled into signing documents connected to her gender transition. His comments sparked backlash from LGBTQ+ advocates and intensified public scrutiny of the family dispute.

More recently, Wilson spoke about her upbringing as the child of one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. In an April interview with Cosmopolitan, she described her childhood as “isolating” and “strange,” reflecting on the disconnect she felt while observing social inequality from a position of immense privilege.

Elon Musk has become the father of 14 children with multiple partners, including musician Grimes, Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis, and influencer Ashley St. Clair.
