Anthropic to pay SpaceX $45b for AI computing resources

Anthropic counters OpenAI with $1 AI offer to government branches

Anthropic has agreed to pay Elon Musk’s SpaceX nearly $45 billion over the next three years for computing resources, under an expanded arrangement supporting its Claude artificial intelligence system, according to a securities filing.

The AI company is expected to pay SpaceX around $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, with capacity gradually ramping up in May and June 2026 at a reduced fee, SpaceX disclosed in IPO-related documents released on Wednesday.

The filing added that either party may terminate the agreement with 90 days’ notice.

Earlier this month, Anthropic said it had secured access to more than 300 megawatts of computing power at SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data centre in Memphis, without revealing financial details.

The startup has since expanded the partnership to include additional capacity at a second SpaceX data centre, according to Anthropic co-founder and chief compute officer Tom Brown.

Anthropic declined to comment further, referring only to Brown’s earlier post.

The partnership brings together two companies competing in the race to build more advanced artificial intelligence systems

For Anthropic, the deal provides access to critical computing resources needed to meet rising demand, as more customers adopt its tools for tasks such as coding and workflow automation.
