Anthropic joins Frontier coalition in $915m carbon removal push

Anthropic has joined Frontier, the carbon removal buyers’ coalition, committing funds as part of a new $915 million financing round and becoming the first AI startup to participate in the initiative.

The latest commitment nearly doubles Frontier’s total funding pledges to $1.8 billion.

To date, the coalition has signed contracts worth almost $700 million with more than 50 carbon removal projects, securing the removal of 1.8 million tons of carbon.

Companies backing Frontier typically use the resulting carbon credits to offset and lower their reported carbon emissions.

The fresh funding strengthens Frontier’s standing in the carbon removal market, but Anthropic’s participation may be the more significant development. Although Google was among Frontier’s founding members, Anthropic becomes the first standalone AI company to join the coalition.

The move comes as AI firms face growing scrutiny over their rapidly rising energy consumption and the environmental impact of powering large-scale data centres.

Frontier marks Anthropic’s first major climate-focused commitment. The company has not yet released a sustainability report and has previously endorsed an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy, an approach often associated with continued reliance on carbon-intensive power sources.

Its decision to join Frontier, however, could indicate an evolving stance on climate responsibility and carbon reduction.
