OpenAI to unify AI tools in new desktop super app strategy

OpenAI unveils GPT-5 amid rising industry investment

OpenAI is planning to merge its web browser, ChatGPT app, and Codex coding tool into a single desktop “super app.”

According to a spokesperson, OpenAI CEO of Applications Fidji Simo will lead the initiative with support from President Greg Brockman, CNBC reported.

The unified app is designed to streamline the user experience and reduce product fragmentation.

“Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus; both are critical,” Simo said in a post on X on Thursday. “But when new bets start to work, like we’re seeing now with Codex, it’s very important to double down on them and avoid distractions. Really glad we’re seizing this moment.”

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the planned super app.

The move to unify OpenAI’s products into a single application follows an all-hands meeting earlier this month, where Fidji Simo addressed staff questions about company priorities.

She said OpenAI is “orienting aggressively” toward high-productivity use cases.
