Lagos gas infrastructure repair boosts power generation nationwide — NISO

The Nigerian Independent System Operator has announced an improvement in power generation nationwide following the repair and restoration of the vandalised Lagos-Escravos gas supply infrastructure.

The management of NISO disclosed this development in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, noting that the restoration has positively impacted electricity generation across the country.

NISO, which was established to manage the national electricity grid with reliability, efficiency, and transparency, stated that its mandate is to enable a sustainable and competitive power sector capable of driving economic growth and improving the quality of life of Nigerians.

According to the statement, the Nigeria Gas Infrastructure Company, NGIC, successfully completed the repairs on the damaged infrastructure, a development that has led to increased power generation and improved gas supply to several key thermal power plants nationwide.

“This development is a positive step towards stabilisng the electricity supply and improving grid reliability for consumers nationwide,” NISO said.

The system operator explained that gradual power offtake is currently being implemented by the affected power plants to ensure a smooth recovery process while maintaining the stability of both the gas supply network and the national electricity grid.

NISO noted that this measured approach is aimed at preventing system stress and ensuring a reliable and sustained supply of electricity to industries, businesses, and households across the country.

It further disclosed that other thermal power plants remain available and are on standby, pending confirmation of gas supply from their respective suppliers on Saturday.

“Once confirmed, these plants will be integrated into the national grid to further strengthen generation capacity and reduce the risk of outage.

“NISO continues to work closely with relevant stakeholders, including power generation companies, gas suppliers, and regulatory bodies, to monitor developments and address any operational challenges in real time,” the statement added.

The system operator also appealed to electricity consumers nationwide to continue practising energy conservation where possible, as coordinated efforts to stabilise power supply across the country continue.
