Harvard database breached in targeted phishing attack

Trump freezes $2bn in Harvard funding over antisemitism measures

A Harvard University database holding sensitive information on alumni, donors, students, and faculty was accessed by an “unauthorized party” after a targeted phone-phishing attack.

It is the second time this year an Ivy League institution has opened a data-breach investigation, underscoring the rising wave of cyberattacks on top U.S. universities, according to Bloomberg.

The breach occurred during the week, exposing data central to Harvard’s fundraising and alumni engagement operations.

According to a statement on the university’s website, the compromised information includes personal contact details, donation records, and alumni engagement data.

Although no suspects have been identified, university officials say they acted swiftly to contain the threat.

“Harvard acted immediately to remove the attacker’s access to our systems and prevent further unauthorized access,” said Tim Bailey, director of communications at Harvard University Information Technology.

“We are working with third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to investigate this incident.”

As the oldest and wealthiest university in the United States, Harvard remains a prime target for cybercriminals.

The institution is a fundraising powerhouse, routinely bringing in more than $1 billion each year.

This latest incident follows an earlier security scare in October, when Harvard began investigating reports that its data had been compromised in a broader hacking campaign linked to Oracle Corp.
