The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has opened an inquiry into Tuesday’s Abuja–Kaduna train derailment, which left six passengers injured but caused no fatalities.
The derailment occurred at about 11:09 a.m. on August 26, 2025, at KM 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations.
NSIB said a response team had been dispatched to the site to gather evidence, engage stakeholders, and determine the cause of the incident.
NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, disclosed in a statement reported by NAN on Tuesday that the bureau sympathises with the injured passengers and pledged that the investigation’s findings would aid in preventing future accidents.
“NSIB is aware of the derailment involving a Kaduna-bound train service which occurred at approximately 11:09 a.m. today, Aug. 26, 2025, at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station.
“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and no recorded fatalities.
“The bureau investigation into the incident will focus on identifying the direct and underlying factors that led to the derailment, with the aim of issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence,” the statement read.
Commenting on the incident, the Director-General of NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh, reaffirmed the bureau’s commitment to an independent investigation to determine the root cause of the derailment.
He noted that investigators would conduct thorough assessments and issue safety recommendations to improve rail transport across the country.
Nigeria’s railway system has faced recurring safety challenges, with derailments being the most common type of accident.
The Abuja–Kaduna corridor, one of the nation’s busiest passenger routes, has experienced multiple incidents, including a hot-axle fault near Rigasa Station just days ago and a derailment at Jeremy Station in May 2024.
